Happy 5 YEARS to this team of wonderful women, our Happy 5 YEARS to this team of wonderful women, our family of patients, and our personal families and friends that have supported us along the way!

Half of all small businesses fail in their first five years, so whew!… we made it! It’s been tough! Pandemic aside, though, it’s been an incredible 5 years of learning and growth. In addition to bringing a new business to life, we also brought enough baby girls into the world to take over the business one day (or form a basketball team!)

I am thrilled to see what New Castle Dental has become - our team, our values and our vision. Before starting, I thought a lot about location, concept, numbers, technical details, service offerings… but the thing that makes it all go is the team and I definitely had no idea how good it could get. They are brilliant, dedicated, caring and generous. I honestly have been trying my best to reflect on accomplishments over the past 5 years, but all I can think about is “what on earth did I do to deserve them?”

So many people, besides the faces we see at work each day, have taken leaps of faith with me along the way. Some of them are in these photos, some not… it’s hard to document the journey in just 10 photos! Regardless, I think often about how we got here and the it’s all been tied to individuals believing in my dreams and giving me support and encouragement to continue.

The vision is not complete, though! We have a lot of good things to share with the community and I look forward to spreading ideas of health as far as we can go. Thank you to every person that has believed in me, the business and the “out-there” ideas. I will be grateful forever.

“We often hear from our expectant and post partu “We often hear from our expectant and post partum mothers that they experience bleeding and gum inflammation during pregnancy. Many women even believe that they are doomed to have decay and inflamed gums during pregnancy. As a woman currently experiencing pregnancy for the very first time, I’ve also read multiple pregnancy books, articles, and information on pregnancy tracking aps telling me that I will be experiencing bleeding gums as a result of pregnancy. Contrary to this belief, here I am nearly 35 weeks pregnant and I have yet to experience bleeding gums and I’ve found great satisfaction in disproving the theory that pregnancy will destroy my teeth and gums. I’ve also never had a cavity!” — Angela

I love the month of May! There is so much to celeb I love the month of May! There is so much to celebrate around here - birthdays, anniversaries, Mother’s Day, warmer weather, and flowers! It’s a month of new beginnings, new possibilities, and growth.

Today, we celebrate 4 years of growth as the team of New Castle Dental. I started this team and practice because I wanted us to help make people healthier overall by showing the importance of taking care of the mouth. We quickly learned, though, that we can’t make people be or do anything…. Now, we are a team that is invested in knowing YOU, what your VALUES are, and what YOU want for your future.

Most people don’t think about their mouths too much and contribute whatever happens in their mouths over time to genetics and fate. Genetics are just the basic ingredients, though. What you do with those ingredients - what you add and how you assemble - makes countless unique outcomes.

We are helping our patients to take active roles in envisioning what their outcomes can be and helping to implement small habitual changes that will set them on the course toward creating their desired outcomes.

What’s that feel like when you are in our office? It feels like your dentist or hygienist sitting with you and having a meaningful conversation until we understand what it is that you are looking to achieve. We look at what health is, because we can’t reach it, if we can’t define it. We give you the tools and knowledge to make informed decisions. When you leave, we don’t stop thinking about you and your goals. We are constantly collaborating as a team on how we can best support you in reaching the future you desire.

What trajectory are you on? Are you going to the dentist every six months, yet continuing a slow and steady decline? Are you losing tooth structure, gum tissue attachment, or bone support? Are you on a path towards tooth loss or is your bite stable and healthy? Are you happy with the trajectory you are on, or do you want to have a different outcome?

“Until you make the unconscious, conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.” James Clear, Atomic Habits

Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers out there! Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers out there!
“I like to consider the gut as a garden. It need “I like to consider the gut as a garden. It needs a great environment and soil to establish. You need to feed it regularly with a variety of foods, probiotics and prebiotics. From time to time, you may need to weed out the harmful pathogens and boost the nutrients to improve the balance. Just like a garden, maintenance is ongoing if you want it to thrive.” -Sarah Appleford
https://www.nutritionforkids.com.au/learn/gut-testing-kids

Exchange the word “gut” for “mouth”. Did you know the mouth is the beginning of the gut, anyway? The two have their own individual microbiomes, but the concept is the same, and I was delighted to read someone else’s version of what I’ve found myself articulating the last few weeks as spring emerges.

A microbiome is the collection of microorganisms that inhabit an area - in this case, a part of the body. The collection of bacteria, viruses and fungi begin to move in upon birth and stabilize as babies grow to toddlers, but it is always changing.

Let’s say your garden is well-tended to and a strong wind comes in and blows the seeds of a noxious weed your way. Was your garden covered in mulch? Did you have bare and susceptible dirt? Do you have well established perennials crowding out the soil, leaving no room or sunshine for little seedlings of weeds to grow? Did you go in there and weed as soon as you saw the little weeds emerge?

The wind could be a new boyfriend or a family member you share food and drinks with. The seeds of the weeds are their bacteria. The mulch and perennials could be your healthy established microbiome. A baby or toddler’s immature and impressionable microbiome would be the “bare soil”. Weeding is your daily brushing and flossing, or maybe that’s “thinning”... 🤔 You get the idea.

We have to take care of our mouths and bodies. Everything you put in your mouth is either nutrition or poison and your mouth will tell you if you’re caring for or neglecting it. Be vigilant though, some bus are hard to see until they do an incredible amount of damage. 🌱🐛
