ALF Therapy and Orthodontics

ORTHODONTIC OPTIONS

Traditional orthodontic treatment straightens teeth, however it does not necessarily realign teeth. Beyond a straight smile, orthodontia can be utilized to correct a person’s bite, resolve jaw issues, and oftentimes realignment can help with breathing issues and sleep disturbances. Common reasons a orthodontic treatment may be recommended to a patient are having a cross-bite, overbite, under-bite, crowded teeth, or problems with space between teeth.

The ALF appliance primarily addresses functional deficiencies before cosmetic changes. The foundation of straight teeth is a healthy, functional jaw.

ALF (Advanced Lightwire Functional)

The ALF appliance is more comfortable than traditional braces. It’s placement behind the teeth makes it cosmetically appealing to patients in treatment. Patients typically come into the office for adjustments and treatment every 4-6 weeks. To create stability and reduce the need for lifelong retention, it is most ideal to introduce the ALF appliance while a child is still growing.

An ALF appliance will correct cranial strains, expand upper and lower dental arches, and reposition the lower jaw to match the upper. The appliance will also establish the correct height for the occlusion/bite eliminating muscle spasms and other problems. Lastly, it will retain the new position allowing the teeth to fully adapt to their new placement.

HOW DOES ALF WORK?

The ALF appliance enhances the Cranio-Sacral-Rhythm, which is the movement of the skull bones and cerebro-spinal fluid. The appliance works as a continual cranio-sacral adjustment that encourages the jaw to develop properly by relieving pressure between the cranial bones. The ALF appliance snaps around the molars and fits behind the teeth. It moves with the natural movement of the skull as it aligns the bones.

HOW LONG WILL I HAVE TO WEAR THE APPLIANCE?

The ALF appliance treatment is unique to each patient, but generally lasts from 1-3 years. Compliance with treatment will also impact the duration of the treatment.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO GET USED TO?

It may take a few days to adapt to wearing the appliance. During this time speech may be affected because it will take some time for your tongue to get used to it.

HOW DO I TAKE CARE OF MY ORAL HYGIENE WHILE WEARING THE ALF?

We recommend brushing after each meal and minimizing snacks and sugary foods. Food will get caught between the wire and your teeth. We also recommend avoiding foods that are crunchy and sticky. Flossing is highly recommended as well as an oral irrigator.
